Ligh: The media and the message
And so, light as the expression and symbol of the divine, the religious, the syblime and as a result of painterly research about the appearence of light in nature could now be subtituted by real electrical light elements based on technical, scientific and manufacturing achievements.
“We refuse to hink of art and science as separate and distinct realms and therefore, that projects cnceived in one cannot belong to the other. Artist anticipate scientific projects and scientific experiments provoke artistic experiments” wrote Lucio Fontana in his first “Manifiesto Spaziale” of 1947
Light without limits
We know that light in itself is not perceptible until in its swift an unobstrusive journey through space it meets a body. The photons emitted by a light source speed silently, radiating in all directions in search of a form, a surface to flood, to kiss in a instant, a dimension to pluck out of the darkness. Can we allow such a magical phenomenon to have a purely utilitarian function?. There must be another dimension, a dimension that cannot be measured in the usual technical terms.
James Turrell, Maklite
My work consist mainly of giving light the materiality that is commonly denied. Usually we use it to light things, but for me light is first of all a raw material with which space is constructed, and an absolutely physical architectonic space, but also something completely, different.
The first thing a person should do if he wants to work with light and colour is throw away the colour tables. It is a pure educational tool: it teaches as that blue + yellow = green. This is all right for painting, but yellow light added to a blue light produces white. The fact that this result leaves everyone open-mouthed is mazing. It shows that perception of light is a great unknown. Whe should start talking of additive light and in terms of spectrum and get out the logic that compels us to describe colours purely in superficial an material terms.
Fabrizio Corneli
Rationality and light come together in sight, the sense that has most guided human intelectual development, with its claims of objectivity. Light is expressed in the form of the halo, of tongues of flame that show the diversity of the divine and the holy, almost the emanation of higher energetic state.
Andrew Ginzel & Kristin Jones
The phenomena of light is extraordinary. The transformation of natural light, the movement, the flux defines time.
Franco Ionda
Nobody exept me me can see my eye as it fixes upon its own image. Moreover, it is only ever one.
Lena Liv
Light and shadow are no longer complementary, in that they reveal an image, but become the life itself and the death of the image, in a system of imaterial effects, similar to that which makes the images of the universe of memory emerge and fade away.
Donatella Mei
It’s light that reveals coolours, depth and colume. Light as lightness, imponderability, the removal of weight, the search dematerialization, light can be mmater and material at the same time.
Fabrizio Plessi
When you cannot distinguish natural from digital light, it means your sensitivity threshold to this element has been heightened. It means that you are ready to recive light. The same light which, like a flash of magnesium, will illuminate the dark and secret areas of your perception.
I see video not like a kitchen appliance that you use to watch the news, but the video is instead an electronic, magnetic, changing, mobile, fluid, dynamic, sonorous part together with so many materials that appear instead as deaf, plastic, remote, fixed.
I always say that one must take technology like one would take medicine, with great caution. Technology must have a purpose, must be a means. That’s why I do not belive, at all, that the medium is the message, but this is something else. The medium must be ancilliary to a purpose, to a poetic content, to a languaje, otherwise we will become slaves of technology.
Gilberto Zorio
The black light is on, immobile, indifferent, it is neutralized by the white light bulb, an hour passes and the white light goes out, there is the “black” ready to attack; the “black” expands and runs through the star’s veins, making them enjoy their own light, then again the white shows itself for at least another hour.
Brian Rasmussen
Light and Shape are developed contemporaneously, taking form each other, creating constat, reciprocal feedback. In this way Light emphasizes the characteristics of Shape and Shape enhances the features of Light.
Light sculptures
“Colours are the actions of light, actions and pasions. In this sense we can expect that they become lighter around light.
Colours and light have a very close relationship, buy we have to present both as belonging to all of nature because it is through them that nature reveals itself entirely to our senses of sight.”
